What is a whoopie pie and why is this dessert so gosh darn tasty?

There is no doubt that a delicious, hearty pizza dinner can leave you feeling full, satisfied and bursting at the belt of your trousers. Between the rich, smooth sauce, the ooey-gooey, melty cheese and the heaps of scrumptious toppings that you can pile on top, it’s hard to imagine wanting to eat anything else when you have a happy, bursting stomach full of pizza.

However, when it comes to some desserts, there are certain kinds of tasty treats that you can just never be too full for, such as the whoopie pie. While it may sound like a funny name or like a snack food you would expect to find in a little kids lunch box, these delectable desserts have been around for decades and have satisfied even the most picky of sweet-toothed connoisseurs.

In fact, in the last couple of years this classic dessert has been popping up everywhere from the high-class bakery counters of New York and Los Angeles, all the way to your neighborhood mom and pop shops and your favorite pizza joints (cough cough) . But, while this simple round treat, made up of two round chocolate cakes and a butter cream center, is being enjoyed by many people all across the country, it was the Pennsylvania Amish who first created the popular dessert.

According to whoopie pie legend, Amish wives would wake up each morning and put their classic, homemade whoopie pies in the lunchboxes of their farmer husbands. When their husbands went to work and found that there was a whoopie pie packed inside their lunch that day, they would shout out the ever appropriate, “whoopie!!”

However, the tradition and the flavors of the classic Amish whoopie pie have changed a little bit since their creation. While the most popular and traditional flavor of a whoopie pie is chocolate cake with vanilla butter cream frosting, many bakeries have gone on to create flavors that are a completely new dessert all on their own: Red Velvet cake with a thick layer of cream cheese in the center, lemon cake with spicy ginger butter cream and even an oatmeal whoopie pie with maple-butter cream filling.

For many people who love to try out new flavors and new holiday concoctions, these new fangled whoopie pies are a delight for their taste buds. However, for those brought up on traditional whoopie pies, these imposter flavors are nothing compared to the original.

But, whether you love the classic chocolate and vanilla butter cream frosting whoopie pie, or prefer one of the new, modern flavors, one thing is for sure―there is nothing that can finish off a night full of pizza and breadsticks quite like the delectable, classic tastes of a whoopie pie.

Family owned and operated since 1990.

What has made Sal’s Pizza such a unique and successful pizza restaurant? It was probably a combination of having the freshest ingredients, competitive prices, and a giant, delicious 3-pound big slice pizza. CEO Sal Lupoli’s quest to create the best pizza started during a culinary apprenticeship in Boston's North End, home to more than 100 authentic Italian eateries. It was here that Sal got the idea for the business that would eventually grow to more than 40 locations in Arizona, California, Florida, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.

Between all of our Sal’s locations, we make over 40,000 pizzas every week! We’re also constantly expanding, and looking for new opportunities to grow. We would love to speak with you if you’re interested in more information about opening a Sal's Pizza franchise.

Along with our big slice pizza, we also offer smaller pizzas, salads, buffalo wings, calzones, and our own special creation: the Salzone, which is basically an open-faced sandwich topped with cheese. For our Sal’s Pals, we periodically offer coupons and discounts to make our already great value an even better deal (see above to sign up).
