Fun Ways To Celebrate Thanksgiving Off At College
December 7, 2011 - Posted by admin

Just because you’re not at home doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate.
Thanksgiving is often thought of as one of the most popular holidays for getting together with friends and family, returning home for a delicious meal and sharing what you are thankful for with the people you care about the most. And while coming home for Thanksgiving is a great privilege for many people, it is not always possible for others.
Because Thanksgiving always falls on the last Thursday in November, that means that many students who are away at college or are off studying abroad are not able to return all the way home for one simple night, which can be upsetting. However, there are several things that you can do in your apartment or dorm room at college that will still let you feel the magic of the holiday and leave your stomach feeling satisfied with a hearty Thanksgiving meal.
Here are some of our best tips for celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday when you are off at college:
Modernize Your Thanksgiving Dinner
While you may not be able to cook up an entire Thanksgiving turkey in your dorm room or microwave (and please don’t try it!), that does not mean that you have to give up the delicious eats of the holiday. Pizza is a simple, delicious substitute that you can completely customize to your favorite Thanksgiving dishes. For instance, add a couple of flavors to your pizza that remind you of your favorite Turkey Day flavors―eggplant, ham, garlic, dried cranberries, etc.
You may also wish to add in a couple of delicious side dishes to your meal that will spice up your Thanksgiving spread and make your meal much more extravagant. Some of our favorite dishes to pair alongside your Thanksgiving pizza are bruschetta, a garden salad, calzones or even some cupcakes and whoopie pies for dessert.
Get Together With Friends
There is a good chance that you are not the only one in your college town that was unable to go home for Thanksgiving break. Therefore, check with your friends or classmates to see who will be around for the holiday and have a group dinner. It can be really enjoyable to gather people from many different backgrounds to see what their idea of a traditional Thanksgiving is and how it may differ from your own. Also, to add a little something extra to your holiday meal, ask each of your friends to bring one of their classic family Thanksgiving dishes to share with the group.
Share What You Are Thankful For
Just because you may have not been able to make it home for your family’s Thanksgiving dinner does not mean that there are not many other things in your life that you are thankful for. Once you have finished your meal and everyone has eaten their last few bites of pizza and breadsticks, go around the room and share two things that you are thankful for in the last year. This will not only give you a chance to truly reflect on the people and things that you are grateful for, but will bring you back to the traditions of this classic holiday.
