Uncovering the healthy side of one of your favorite family foods.

Pizza is one of the few types of food in the world that is a favorite for people of all different body types and cultural backgrounds. Whether you are a kid at one of your friend’s birthday parties, or a senior citizen celebrating your 80th wedding anniversary, pizza is a classic meal that is used to celebrate many different momentous occasions.

However, while there is no denying the deliciousness and satisfaction behind a nice, hot slice of pizza, many people are often unsure about the effects that this classic meal can have on our health and our bodies.

While pizza has a tendency be high in saturated fat, calories and salt, it can actually have many benefits to your health as long as you are choosing the right ingredients and are cutting back on the fatty, less healthy ones.

We have put together four of the most common vitamins and minerals that you can find in a typical slice of pizza, as well as the best type of ingredients to find them in. By adding a little more of these toppings and flavors to your next pizza pie, you will find that one of your favorite meals may just be a little bit better for both your taste buds and your health.

Calcium
One of the most commonly loved ingredients in any type of pizza is cheese, which happens to contain a lot of calcium and protein, especially when you use a milk-based cheese such as mozzarella. As many people know, calcium is essential for strong bones and teeth and plays a large role in preventing osteoporosis. However, this mineral does more than prevent weak bones. Increased calcium intake can also help to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of hypertension.

Fiber
Adding vegetables to your pizza, such as tomatoes, bell peppers, spinach and onions, will help to supply your body with the essential fiber that it needs to maintain a healthy daily diet. Fiber not only helps to promote proper digestive health and reduced cholesterol, but it may also reduce your risk of serious health problems such as heart disease and cancer.

Protein
When you take away the water in our bodies, about 75% of our weight is made up of protein. Therefore, it is essential that our body takes in a lot of this chemical in order to function well and boost our daily energy. Canadian bacon and lean ground beef are some of the best meat options when it comes to getting the highest amount of protein, but nearly any meat will provide you with some amount.

Vitamin C
Tomatoes are packed full of Vitamin C and are used to prepare the sauce on many different types of pizza. A healthy dose of vitamin C will help to protect your body from infection and maintain healthy bones, as well as quicken your skins ability to heal wounds and ward off germs and bacteria. Adding a generous amount of sauce to your pizza will help to increase the amount of Vitamin C that you receive.

    • welcome to sal’s pizza

Family owned and operated since 1990.

What has made Sal’s Pizza such a unique and successful pizza restaurant? It was probably a combination of having the freshest ingredients, competitive prices, and a giant, delicious 3-pound big slice pizza. CEO Sal Lupoli’s quest to create the best pizza started during a culinary apprenticeship in Boston's North End, home to more than 100 authentic Italian eateries. It was here that Sal got the idea for the business that would eventually grow to more than 40 locations in Arizona, California, Florida, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.

Between all of our Sal’s locations, we make over 40,000 pizzas every week! We’re also constantly expanding, and looking for new opportunities to grow. We would love to speak with you if you’re interested in more information about opening a Sal's Pizza franchise.

Along with our big slice pizza, we also offer smaller pizzas, salads, buffalo wings, calzones, and our own special creation: the Salzone, which is basically an open-faced sandwich topped with cheese. For our Sal’s Pals, we periodically offer coupons and discounts to make our already great value an even better deal (see above to sign up).

Hungry yet? Check out the Sal's Pizza menu or find a Sal's Pizza location near you!
