Satisfy your after-pizza sweet tooth with a tasty cannoli for dessert.

There is nothing quite like spending a cozy, relaxing night at home, curling up with a thick blanket and a classic movie, and enjoying a steaming, fresh made pizza pie. Whether you are someone who enjoys soaking up every ounce of flavor and topping yourself, or you are nice enough to share your tasty dish with friends and family, there is no doubt that a large, full topping pizza is satisfying enough to put your taste buds at bay.

However, every once in a while, you may find that you still have a unique craving long after your last slice of pizza has been eaten. Once you have licked the last flavors of pizza sauce and Italian spice off of your fingers, and scoured your empty pizza box for any rouge pepperonis, many people will find that there is a certain need that still lingers in the deep pits of their stomach. The longing for something savory, rich and, most of all, satisfying.

No worries, we have got the perfect Italian dessert that will help to quench your sweet tooth long after the pizza has gone―cannolis.

Every great Italian meal is enhanced by adding a rich, chocolaty dessert onto the end. However, there is no dessert that is quite as popular, or as rich in Italian tradition, as the cannoli. Many people swear that the taste and the experience of eating a well-made cannoli is something that can never truly be forgotten, which is why many have dubbed this decadent dessert an Italian specialty.

To give you a better idea of what makes this classic treat so special, we have put together some basic information and history about the Italian cannoli.

What Is A Cannoli?
Cannolis are a classic Sicilian pastry dessert that consist of tube-shaped shells or fried pastry dough, filled with a sweet, creamy filling. While the traditional Italian filling is a sweetened ricotta cheese filling, sometimes mixed with candied orange zest or citron, any mousse may be used. Other popular cannoli fillings include dark or white chocolate, fresh berry, or a simple, sweet whipped cream filling.

The ends of a cannoli are often decorated with whatever topping is included in the filling in order to give it an extra flare of color and texture. Many people choose to dot the open ends of the pastry with chopped pistachios, semi-sweet chocolate bits, candied citrus peel or even pink sprinkles, as often seen in the United States.

Where Did The Cannoli Come From?
Originating in the Palermo area, cannolis were first historically prepared as a treat during the ancient Carnevale season. Eventually, the dessert became so popular that they became a year-round staple throughout Italy.

The versions of Cannolis that Americans are most familiar with tend to involve many different variations on the original recipe. Many historians believe that this is possibly due to adaption’s that were made by Italians who emigrated to the U.S. in the early 1900s, and were faced with a limited availability of certain ingredients.

To truly get a better understanding of these classic Italian pastries, and experience the flavor and satisfaction of a fresh-made cannoli first hand, be sure to stop by your local Sal’s Pizza and pick them up with your next order. However, don’t say we didn’t warn you: Soon after you have tried this delicious dessert, you will never want to end an Italian meal without one.

Family owned and operated since 1990.

What has made Sal’s Pizza such a unique and successful pizza restaurant? It was probably a combination of having the freshest ingredients, competitive prices, and a giant, delicious 3-pound big slice pizza. CEO Sal Lupoli’s quest to create the best pizza started during a culinary apprenticeship in Boston's North End, home to more than 100 authentic Italian eateries. It was here that Sal got the idea for the business that would eventually grow to more than 40 locations in Arizona, California, Florida, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.

Between all of our Sal’s locations, we make over 40,000 pizzas every week! We’re also constantly expanding, and looking for new opportunities to grow. We would love to speak with you if you’re interested in more information about opening a Sal's Pizza franchise.

Along with our big slice pizza, we also offer smaller pizzas, salads, buffalo wings, calzones, and our own special creation: the Salzone, which is basically an open-faced sandwich topped with cheese. For our Sal’s Pals, we periodically offer coupons and discounts to make our already great value an even better deal (see above to sign up).
